3 Signs That Indicate You Need A New Roof

The cost of a new roof varies, according to roof specialist firm Chicago roofing services. They say the cost is typically based on how much contractors charge per area and what types of materials you use – contractors can take anywhere from one to several days to install a new roof. Or, if you plan to replace the roof yourself, it’s a major home remodel that could take a few days to weeks to complete, depending on how much time and help you have.

That said, if you don’t act on replacing the roof when signs of wear are first observed, it can mean more expensive repairs down the road. The most common problem is that water seeps from under the worn shingles and causes damage to the structures below. That’s when leaks enter the home and mold begins to appear. On the softer side, an old roof can look just plain ugly.

When to replace the roof

So here are some of the first signs that the roof may need to be replaced.

Replace Your Cracked Roof Shingles:

The easiest way to know that you need to replace your roof is that the shingles themselves are beginning to look worn.

There are a few ways to say that you will need a new roof based on how your shingles look like small changes as big investments will all depend on damage like these:

  • The edges of shingles may be curled or have a cup-like appearance.
  • The ringworm is cracking
  • There may be patches of baldness
  • In short, if your roof is starting to look old and worn, it’s time for a new one. Replace the roof moss on the roof

Moss appears:

Another key sign that you may need to replace the roof is that you are seeing moss on or between the shingles. Although the moss on the roof may appear to be a quaint quality that will make your home look like a fairy tale cabin in the woods, it is a sign of a potential problem.

Moss by itself is not an automatic sign that you need a new roof immediately, it grows naturally on or between shingles, especially on roofs that are in shady or humid climates. But the moss could hint at hidden damage.

The problem with moss is that when it rains it absorbs water like a sponge and clings to it. The goal of shingles is to allow water to run off the roof and into gutters, when moss is present, it prevents moisture from going where it needs to go.

That can lead to shingles breaking out. Because the moss prevents water from reaching the gutters, it can also lead to water seeping into the layers underneath the shingles, causing water damage and mold growth on the roof and probably not act inside the house.

So, if you see moss, you will need to call in a company so that they can clean up the moss and look for signs of permanent damage.

Replace your old roof:

Another key factor in determining whether you need to replace your roof is the age of that roof. This is not a warning sign that can be seen sometimes, but it is worth keeping in mind.

Roofs that are at least 20 years old can benefit from being replaced with higher quality materials. Typical asphalt shingles last about that long.

However, other materials can last longer. The slate roofs, copper and clay / concrete can last more than 50 years and wooden ceilings stirred can last about 30, for example. So, depending on what material you have on your roof and when you last replaced it, it might be time to prevent leaks down the road.

And remember, for such a large investment, you may want to consider getting materials that last longer and are more durable, like metal roofs.
